COZAD WRESTLING INVITATIONAL: MAT CARNIVAL

Getting the tournament campaign started off at the top of the medal stand to claim the gold medal championship honors at the 2018 Cozad Invitational on Saturday was Greg Treffer, Ivan Lazo, Brady Fago, Dakota Haines, Riley Kopf, Aidan Stuart and Jade Wurth of Lexington. The Haymaker quartet of Jace Russman, Kaleb Pohl, Blake Hoffmaster and Cade Stott all earned gold medalist accolades as well.

As a result of the threat of severe winter weather conditions, the field of competitors in each weight calss was diminished, but the action on the mats in the Cozad High School Barn, was red-hot and saturated with quality performances in round-robin formats. Putting on a dominating performance was Jade Wurth of Lexington with a 4-0 finish with all wins coming via pinfall at 285 lb. In the fifth round of matches, Wurth went toe-to-toe with Cozad’s Josh Stallbaumer in the gold meda match. Wurth was able to finally get the pinfall at the 2:39 mark of the matchup against, Stallbaumer, who finished second overall . Wurth was able to finish all four of his matches via pinfall, with the quickest coming in jsut 11 seconds. In the decisive round, gold medalist Aidan Stuart of Lexington was victorious over Bryce Ewoldt via pin at the 3:51 mark of their matchup. The duo of Dakota Haines and Riley Kopf scored gold medal winning performances for Lexington at 160 and 170 lbs. Kopf won the gold as a result of four pins on the day, with the decisive pinfall coming against runner-up Conner Wescoat of Cozad at the 5:54 mark of their showdown. Haines got to the top of the medal stand with a pair of pins, a major decision and a 7-2 decision over silver medalist Heath Keiser. In one of the biggest matches of the day, Brady Fago of Lexington was able to win the gold medal accolades via sudden victory (SV-1, 6-4) over Wyatt Hotz of Gothenburg in a duel at 132 that wasn’t for the faint at heart. Both Fago and Hotz pinned their way to all the way to their head-to-head shootout. Cozad’s Corbyn Sattler was third overall in the divison. Lexington flyweights Greg Treffer and Ivan Lazo were the gold medalist in the 106 and 113 lb divisions, respectively. Treffer had a pair of pins on his way to the gold. Lazo was able to continue the pin streak with three of his own pinfalls. In another one of the cross county showdowns that was as good as advertised, Jace Russman of Cozad defeated Ean Bailey of Lexington via sudden victory (SV-1, 4-2). Bailey was the 120 lb runner-up. Russman recorded a pair of pins to reach the third round with an unscathed season record. Haymaker Kaleb Pohl was the gold medalist at 145 lbs by defeating Sam Holt of Holdrege via pinfall at the 0:49 mark of their match. Pohl reached the medal round by recording three straight pinfalls. Cozad Senior Blake Hoff-master went the distance to score a 6-2 win over Tyler Peterson of Holdrege to win the 152 lb gold medalist honors. To reach the medal match, Hoffmaster won via pinfall in his first three matches. In one of the most competitive divisions from top to bottom, Cade Stott of Cozad won the gold medal at 220 lbs. Stott finished with a 3-1 record and won the head to head battle with runner-up Trent Weak of Holdrege via pinfal at the 3:33 mark of their match. Earning silver medalist accolades wasAngel Vega of Lexington in the 126 lb weight division. Vega was 1-1 on the day with his victory coming against Kaleb Jackson of Mitchell after he was edged by Brandon Carpenter of Holdrege by the score of 8-7.
