Larry Patterson

Larry Patterson, 81, of San Diego passed away peacefully at his Point Loma home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, April 23, 2022. Larry was born in Fremont, NE, on September 7, 1940, to Luther and Faye Patterson. He graduated from Cozad High School in Cozad, NE (when his father, Luther Patterson, was Superintendent) where he excelled both academically and in sports. As a freshman, Larry ran on the varsity state record-setting mile relay team. During his senior year, he was first team all- conference in basketball and set records in track (including running the halfmile in just under two minutes), helping to lead the Cozad Haymakers to the NE state track title. Larry received track and Regent’s scholarships to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with Honors. Larry married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Hanna, in 1962 and they had two daughters, Lisa and Lyn, who both made him very proud. His second marriage to Nancy Dorman in 1978 included his move from Freeport, IL, to Los Angeles and then San Diego, CA. In 1993 Larry married Sandra “Sandi” Kaplan, and they enjoyed the rest of his years together. Larry was stepdad to Sandi’s two sons, Jeff and Josh Kaplan. Being grandpa to Lyn’s daughter Hanna and to Josh’s son Ethan and daughter Elena was a source of great joy for him. Larry served as a U.S. Army Officer during the Vietnam War in 1967 as an Artillery Forward Observer and Artillery Liaison Officer. He received two Air Medals and two Bronze Stars, one for his heroism during an intense overnight battle. Many of his fellow soldiers credit Larry with saving their lives that night.

In 1968, Larry embarked on a 33-year career in Human Resources with Honeywell in Freeport, IL, and eventually transferred to Southern California in Los Angeles where he became the Manager of Human Resources for West Coast Operations and oversaw the plant’s relocation to San Diego. Larry liked to say he “retired to the beach” in 2001. Larry was a gifted singer and he loved performing as part of a band, in a church choir or on a karaoke stage. Most recently he was a soloist and member of the choir at Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church.

Larry enjoyed classic cars and riding his Harley. Together Larry and Sandi enjoyed traveling, whether it was a road trip or a European river cruise. He was a lifelong fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and loved watching various sports. Most mornings, Larry could be found at the counter of The Old Townhouse Restaurant in Ocean Beach drinking coffee and reading the newspaper where he was known as one of “The Regulars” for over 20 years. Larry was a lifelong volunteer serving on numerous boards throughout his career including the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce. He received the Otay Mesa Annual Spirit of the Border Award for numerous lobbying trips to Washington, DC in support of border crossing issues. Most recently, Larry served as an elder and held various leadership positions at Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Donna Wilson. He is survived by his wife Sandra Patterson of San Diego, CA; his sister Patricia (Phil) Eisenhauer of Bainbridge Island, WA; daughter Lisa Patterson (Jon Bresnahan) of Big Bear Lake, CA; daughter Lyn Patterson of San Diego, CA; stepson Jeff Kaplan (Joe Schenck) of Los Angeles, CA; stepson Josh Kaplan (Alexandra Fierro) of El Cajon, CA; and grandchildren Hanna Patterson, Ethan Kaplan and Elena Kaplan.
