Ingrid L. Stevens

Ingrid Linnea Stevens, age 97, passed away Wednesday, November 27th, 2019 at Meadowlark Pointe Assisted Living in Cozad, Nebraska and joined her beloved husband Clark. Born in Smöland, Sweden on September 19th, 1922, Ingrid and her sister Millie emigrated to the United States around 1923 with their parents Gus and Ada Hyllman and grew up on Bothways Farm near Essex, Massachusetts, where her father was manager. She graduated from Topsfield High School in 1940 and afterwards trained at Beverly Hospital, Massachusetts, becoming a registered nurse in 1943. She worked at Beverly Hospital as a supervisor of the outpatient department for operating rooms and delivery rooms, supervising student nurses. It was there that she met the love of her life, Clark W. Stevens. After Clark served in the medical corps in Japan and Ingrid served as a reserve nurse in the Navy Nurse Corps, they were united in marriage on August 24th, 1946 at Manchester, Massachusetts. In 1950, they moved to Dubuque, Iowa where Clark was one of the founding physicians of Medical Associates.

Ingrid and Clark raised four children in Dubuque in a house filled with beautiful mementos of their travels around the world, including sojourns on all 7 continents from Berlin to Beijing, and Machu Picchu to New Guinea. Back at home, Ingrid managed the household and kept close to her community through her support for Westminster Presbyterian Church, PEO and the several boisterous bridge groups. Her passion for bird-watching and commitment to her family showed in her home, where she welcomed a growing houseful of extended family during the holiday season with huge feasts at Thanksgiving and Christmas; at these she encouraged youngsters (and former youngsters) to “finish it up, and it will be a nice day tomorrow.”

In 2019 she moved to Meadowlark Apartments to be close to her family in Cozad, Nebraska. She is survived by her children, Clark Stevens (Maria) of Green Bay, WI, Ann Rodhouse (Steve) of Cozad, Cynthia Nielsen (Lars) of Littleton, NH, and Andrew Stevens (Anna) of Madison, WI. She also leaves her grandchildren: Lesley Fessler, Fred Nelsen, Tom Nelsen, Clark Stevens III, Andrea Keller, and Kristjar Nielsen and his great-grandchildren: Alexa and Abigail Nelsen; Ava and CoraLeigh Fessler; Makenzie, Micah, and Gracyn Nelsen; Juliana, Colton and Livia Keller; and Clark IV and Alexander Stevens.
