LADY HAYMAKER blockers Abigail Nelsen (6) and Carly Jensen go vertical in an attempt to alter the kill attempt by Gothenburg’s Kendal Wahlgren on Thursday.

The stage was set for a thrilling rivalry renewal for the Gothenburg and Cozad net squads in a postseason tune-up at the Barn that finished the regular season for both squads on Thursday evening.

In front of an electric crowd, the Lady Swedes were able to defeat Cozad, 13-25, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-20.

The game remained close on the scoreboard throughout much of the first frame with the scoring difference being just one to two points until Cozad was able to scored four straight points to lead 14-10 on their way to leading 22-13 on a 10-3 scoring surge. The Lady Haymakers then were able to string together three straight points to take the opening set in dominant fashion, 25-13.

Looking to turn the tide and garner the momentum, the Lady Swedes surged to a 4-0 early lead in the second set. Soon thereafter, the Gothenburg hitters cashed in on opportunities to lead 13-5 on an 8-5 scoring run.

The Lady Swedes backed up the scoring run by keeping the pendulum in their favor, with a 7-3 scoring surge that gave Gothenburg a commanding 20-8 lead.

For the remainder of the second set, the Cozad and Gothenburg offensive units exchanged scores with the Lady Swedes being able to then notch the 25-13 set victory.

The score was knotted at 1-1 with both Cozad and Gothenburg feeling the momentum sway in their favors during the first two sets of the match.

In the early going of the third set, the deadlocked momentum swing remained with the score being 4-4 before a 5-2 scoring run by Gothenburg to grab the lead 9-6. The Lady Swedes duplicated the effort with yet another scoring run, this time on a 7-3 surge that made the score 16-9.

The Lady Swedes kept on the offensive as they put together a 6-3 scoring run to make the score 22-12. During the final moments of the third set, the Lady Haymakers and Swedes exchange serves to finish the set with Gothenburg earning the 25-16 win to make the set count 2-1 in their favor.

In the four set, Cozad fell behind early and then rushed back into contention in a big way on a 7-4 scoring run to take a 15-14 lead before the Lady Swedes took a timeout. The Gothenburg netters came out of the timeout by scoring three straight points to regarner the lead that they would never relinquish on their way to claiming a hard-fought 25-20 victory. With the win, the Lady Swedes won the match, 13-25, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-20.
