Ellen Ileen (Dannehl) Gengenbach, 96, of Lincoln (formerly of Bertrand, NE) passed away at the Cove House in Lincoln on March 14th, 2019.

Ellen was born February 4th, 1923, in Elwood, NE to Louie and Lula (Force) Dannehl. She graduated from Elwood High School in 1941 as valedictorian of her class. After graduation she worked as a telephone operator and then taught at Traceyville School near Smithfield, NE. On October 10th, 1945, Ellen was united in marriage to Louis Albert Gen- at St John’ Lutheran Church in genbach . s Eustis, NE. To this union, three children were born. Ellen and Louis spent their working years on a farm near Smithfield.

Ellen and Louis were members of Hope Lutheran Church in Smithfield. Ellen enjoyed being the pianist for children’s Sunday school and also taught Sunday school classes. She was active in several women’s circles. She volunteered at the Bertrand Nursing Home and delivered meals on wheels. She loved playing cards (especially bridge) and socializing with friends at the Bertrand Senior Center. She enjoyed playing golf, taking care of her yard and flowers, and entering her flowers in the Bertrand Fair and Flower Show. Ellen and Louis loved traveling and spending winters in Arizona before moving to their retirement home at The Landings in Lincoln. She played the piano there for Sunday church services and sewed “Linus” children’s blankets for distribution all over Nebraska. Ellen and Louis were avid Husker fans. When their health failed they moved to the Cove House. Louis passed away June 16th, 2018.

Above all, her family was the joy and love of her life. Ellen is survived by her daughters Marilynn (Dave) Andreasen and Debra (Richard) Henderson both of Lincoln, and son Dennis (Janice) Gengenbach of Smithfield, NE. Grandchildren from Lincoln include Teresa (Tim) Blair; Sherri (Steve) Rexroth; Carrie (Chris) Erks; Amy (Jon) Starr; Amber (Bryan) Kinnan; Autumn (Josh) Lehn; Nate (Nikki) Gengenbach of Hastings; and Darcy Schlothauer of Gering. Great Grandchildren from Lincoln include Derrick (Megan) Rexroth; Ashley Rexroth; Preston, Dylan & Olivia Erks; Ryker and Gannon Starr; Riley and Cooper Kinnan; Remington, Stella, Tatumn and Scarlett Lehn; Micah and Hannah Gengenbach of Hastings; and Macy, Max and Clare Schlothauer of Gering. She is also survived by sister-in-law Shirley Gengenbach of Eustis.

Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, 2019, 11:00 a.m. at Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A St., Lincoln NE. An inurnment service will be held at a later date in Bertrand, NE. Suggested memorials are to the Bertrand Senior Center or to the family for an agricultural scholarship to be established at Bertrand High School.
