Getting off to a fast start was rewarded for the Reds Seniors as they scored an early lead on their way to claiming a 10-1 victory over the Bulls of Hi-Line on Monday evening at Muny Park in Cozad. Hi-Line threatened to score in the top of

Hi-Line threatened to score in the top of the first inning when Ander Wasenius was able to earn a leadoff walk and then advance around to third base to get stranded in scoring position as Cozad’s Spencer Pleschourt struck out the next three batters to retire the side.

Cozad was able to break the ice on the scoreboard during their half of the first inning when Austin Werner led off with a double. Werner was then able to score on Evan Thome’s RBI-single. Soon thereafter, Thome stepped on the dish to score on Eli Werner’s single into left field to push the lead to 2-0 at the end of the first inning.

In the top of the second inning, the Evan Niemeier was able to get on base the hard way via being hit by a pitch. Niemeier was on his way to getting in scoring position as he stole second base and then it was Cozad catcher Austin Werner that threw out Niemeier as he tried to steal third base to extinguish the scoring threat and keep the score at 2-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Reds were able to extend their lead in a big way as they rattled the bats for five runs. Austin Werner, Evan Thome, Eli Werner, Kody Keller, Spencer Pleschourt and Nolan Wetovick all joined together on a hit parade of singles that scored Austin Werner, Thome, Eli Werner, Kody Keller and

Pleschourt to move the lead to 7-0 before all the smoke cleared on the third inning of play.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Bulls looked to strike back and swing the momentum back in their direction. The Hi-Line offense got a leadoff single off the bat of Nate Hodge. Hodge was then able to advance to second on a clutch sacrifice bunt by Haiden VanHoutan. A single into right field by Carsen Reiners moved Hodge 90 feet closer to scoring. Hodge was then able to sprint home to score on a Cozad miscue that made the score 7-1. Soon thereafter, Evan Niemeier hit into a fiel - ders choice and a ‘pickle’ ensued with the Reds getting the double-play to get out of trouble holding onto a 7-1 lead.

The Reds Seniors bats responded in a big way in the bottom of the fourth frame when Austin Werner was walked and then advanced around to score on hustle plays to move the lead to 8-1. Soon thereafter Kody Keller and Spencer Pleschourt were both walked as well. Keller was able to score on a Bulls miscue and Pleschourt ventured homeward bound on Nolan Wetovick’s RBI-single into left field to move the lead to 10-1.

With their backs against the wall it was now or never time for the Bulls, as Quentin Shaner and Kaden Clouse both got on base via two-out walks to put runners on first and second base. The Bulls were in business until relief pitcher Nolan Wetovick was able to finish the job and record the third out with a strikeout to end the threat and Cozad earned the 10-1 win.

Austin Werner was 2-2 at the plate with a double, three stolen bases and three runs scored to lead the Reds Seniors.

Evan Thome, Eli Werner and Holan Wetovick all had two RBI’s for the Cozad Seniors Nine.

Nate Hodge and Carens Reiners led the Bulls with one hit apiece.
